It is because of less consumption of fuel and safety factor of not having a propeller in the water. There’s no swirling propeller exposed to swimmers or skiers, no bulky outdrive that can strike or cause damage. Jet drive is a safer alternative than propeller one.
Jet boat is any boat propelled by a "Jet" of water coming from the back of the craft. This stands opposed to powered boats, which use propellers in the water, or sailing boats which rely on the wind in their sails. In this sense, a jet boat could be anything from the large turbo-charged machines that hold loads of passengers, to Jet Skis, that hold just one or two passengers at a time.
